Election 2016

I was the Communications Lead for the Women's Equality Party in Scotland over the 2016 Scottish Elections, the first ever that the party participated in. Two candidates stood, one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh.

I worked on the manifesto launch event in Scotland, the campaign launch and events and candidate support.

The Women's Equality Party candidates made a significant impact in their first elections, garnering over 6000 votes in total, an impressive impact for a new political party, and one which was also running the party leader for London Mayor during the same time period.

This challenge was a real test of my resourcefulness, having to create campaign collateral from scratch, and make best use of social media, as well as getting around election rules for press which in Scotland mostly followed BBC protocols of barring coverage for any parties who did not stand candidates in every region. Despite this I successfully garnered press coverage and leveraged a number of opportunities to raise awareness of this new political party with a fledgling support in Scotland.

This campaign showed me that I could raise awareness without significant press coverage or budget, from a standing start and on a skeleton team. The election results were a proud achievement for everyone involved in the party in Scotland.
