Pressed for Time

Electric Bookshop created an interactive installation to explore the history and material cultures of books and reading - this was supported by the innovative Alt-W Fund run by New Media Scotland.

The installation comprised a 'library' of devices including Pressed For Time, an interactive app which generated radical instructions for reading activists, The Storytrope, a hand-illustrated zoetrope which played animated records of The Wind in the Willows, the Self-Help Book, a kinetic sculpture, the Paperback Station which allowed visitors to create their own comic about Jim Haynes, founder of the first paperback bookshop, and other miscellaneous devices. Gabriella Marcella DiTano, Eleanor Stewart and Ali Lloyd were collaborating artists alongside myself, Peggy Hughes and Padmini Ray Murray. The fantastic band Book Group played at the launch event at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. Thanks to Amanda Tyndall and Mark Daniels in particular for their support.
